A fire tore through the RSU 20 bus garage in Searsport Saturday afternoon, destroying the building and prompting an active investigation by state fire officials.

According to authorities, the blaze was reported at approximately 3:35 p.m., drawing a response from the Searsport Fire Department. The first fire unit on scene reported smoke coming from the structure, a sagging roof on the right side of the building, and heavy fire conditions just inside the front door on the right-hand side.

The building was ultimately destroyed by the fire.

Investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshall’s Office responded to the scene and conducted an examination of the fire area. Officials determined the fire originated in the right rear portion of the garage, where a pickup truck and a school bus were parked at the time.

Fire investigators are scheduled to return to the site on Monday to conduct follow-up interviews with bus mechanics as they continue working to determine the cause of the fire. The investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
