The Maine branch of the Fraternal Order of Police expressed its staunch support for immigration officials and enforcement action in Maine, condemning Gov. Janet Mills’ (D-Maine) anti-ICE rhetoric and any attempts to obstruct law enforcement.

“The Maine Fraternal Order of Police stands in support of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carrying out lawful enforcement operations in Maine, and we stand with all duly sworn law enforcement officers across the country who put their lives on the line to uphold the rule of law and protect the public,” said the order.
The order expressed the belief that policy debates should not be conducted through intimidation and vilification of law enforcement or attempts to obstruct their duties. Instead, they stated, those debates should be held in the legislature.
They maintained support for the rights of peaceful protesters but warned against violence.
“Disagreement never justifies endangering members of the public or the brave men and women who serve in uniform,” they said.
They particularly targeted Gov. Mills for her anti-ICE rhetoric, suggesting that ICE agents may come to the state to “violate the civil rights” of Mainers.
“The rhetoric coming from Maine’s Governor and other political figures has contributed to unnecessary division and confusion. Some leaders have promoted messaging that ‘gaslights’ the public into believing that obstruction, hospitality, or blanket condemnation of law enforcement improves safety,” they said.
“The Maine Fraternal Order of Police will continue to stand with ICE and with all duly sworn law enforcement officers who serve with courage, restraint, and dedication. We remain committed to the safety of Maine’s communities and to the principles of law, order and justice for all,” they concluded.
