Piscataquis Sheriff Bob Young will be retiring from his position at the end of 2026 after serving as sheriff since 2018 and working with the department for 42 years.

“It’s been a good run, 42 years of working for the folks of Piscataquis. I didn’t intend to stay this long. Starting as a corrections officer/dispatcher, I was figuring on 2 to 3 years. Being Sheriff wasn’t even a loose thought rolling around my mind. But, as with all of us, the years mount as you live life, learn the job, and gain experience,” said Young in his announcement via Facebook.

“I will miss the people, and Piscataquis County has many good people. Salt-of-the-earth people who take genuine interest in their neighbors, are supportive of the Sheriff’s Office and all law enforcement, who take pride in this county, and who make this job memorable,” he added.

Young was first elected to the office in 2018 and has served as sheriff since, after working his way through the department from dispatcher and corrections officer to Chief Deputy, before eventually deciding to run.

He promised that he would serve out the remainder of his term as sheriff, which ends at the end of 2026.

“By God’s grace I can finish well and leave a strong department to the next Sheriff. As Sheriff, there are many things out of my control, and you have to figure out how do [sic] with what you have. But the one thing I do control, and the greatest difference I can make, is the people we hire. And we are blessed to have good people,” said Young.

Young’s department was among those that took significant action to execute search warrants against and seize contraband from illegal Chinese-operated marijuana grow sites.
