WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said Friday in a Truth Social post that Venezuela is “releasing large numbers of political prisoners” as a sign it is “seeking peace,” and claimed the cooperation prompted him to cancel what he described as a previously expected “second Wave of Attacks.”

Trump posted the statement at 4:19 a.m. Eastern on Jan. 9, 2026, calling the alleged prisoner releases “a very important and smart gesture.” He wrote that the U.S. and Venezuela are “working well together,” particularly on what he described as rebuilding Venezuela’s oil and gas infrastructure “in a much bigger, better, and more modern form.”

“Because of this cooperation, I have cancelled the previously expected second Wave of Attacks,” Trump wrote, adding that it “looks like it will not be needed.”

Even with the cancellation, Trump said “all ships will stay in place for safety and security purposes.”

Trump also claimed “at least 100 Billion Dollars will be invested by BIG OIL,” and said he planned to meet with oil companies later Friday at the White House.

The post did not provide details about which prisoners were being released, what specific agreements were reached between the U.S. and Venezuela, or what military actions Trump was referencing.
