BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 47-year-old Woolwich man was killed Friday night after his vehicle left the roadway on a Brunswick bridge and plunged down an embankment, according to police.

Brunswick police said officers were called around 7:30 p.m. to Route 1 near the Route 196 on-ramp after reports of a serious crash. Investigators determined the man was driving a 2013 Dodge Journey on the Route 196 on-ramp toward northbound Route 1 when the vehicle went off the road, traveled up an icy embankment, went over a barrier, and fell to the ground below.

The driver, identified by police as Shannon MacGregor of Woolwich, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A dog that was inside the vehicle was injured in the crash and transported to emergency veterinary services. Authorities said the animal is expected to recover.

The crash forced the closure of the Route 1 on-ramp and reduced northbound Route 1 traffic to a single lane for several hours while emergency crews responded and investigators worked at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by local and state authorities.
