Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit mounted a six-month-long investigation into James Cameron, 62, of Howland, which ultimately led them to apply for and receive an arrest warrant.
Troopers took Cameron into custody in Howland. He was transported to the Penobscot County Jail and faces four counts of violation of sex offender registration and two counts of prohibited contact with a minor.
He made his initial appearance at the Bangor Penobscot County Judicial Center on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty.
Cameron has since been released on bail and is set to appear in court on March 3.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) assisted in the investigation.
According to his page on the sex offender registry, Cameron was sentenced in Massachusetts for raping a child under the age of 16.
