The Maine State Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place in Vassalboro on Monday between a pickup truck and a commercial vehicle.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., troopers responded to reports of a head-on crash on Route 3 near Ritch Road involving a Chevy Silverado pickup truck and a Ford F-650 commercial vehicle.

Investigators believe that the driver of the pickup truck, Ryan Page, 48, of China, crossed the center line, prompting the commercial driver, Douglas Boivin, 64, of Jay, to swerve to the right in an attempt to avoid the pickup.

Boivin was unable to completely avoid the truck, and the pickup struck his vehicle.

Page was severely injured in the crash and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Bovin was uninjured.

A third vehicle swerved to avoid Page’s truck, which had ended up on the road, and struck a guardrail. The driver sustained minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and it is not clear what caused Page to cross the median.
