The U.S. Menโs Hockey Team player who had complained that NHL officials stole the โgolden puckโ from him is suddenly skating backwards.
Golden boy Jack Hughes says he now can see the wisdom in his winning puck staying in a glass display case at the NHL Hall of Fame museum.
โItโs an honor the puck is there,โ he told reporters Thursday. โItโs like the most special place in hockey. Iโm honored that itโs there.โ
Only a day before, Hughes said the fact that the NHL had taken his winning puck was โbullshit***.โ
He had said he wanted to give his father the priceless puck as a memento of his historic gold-winning shot at the Milan Olympics.
But after a day of contemplation he changed his tune, saying he can see why the Hall of Fame wants to keep it.
Judging from a curt comment Thursday from a top NHL official, Hughes really had no choice one way or the other.
โUnfortunately it was never Jackโs puck to own,โ vice president of the resource center and curator for the Hockey Hall of Fame Philip Pritchard said. โItโs been donated to us now. For every artifact thatโs been donated, we have a paper trail and signed paperwork of where itโs come from.โ
The U S. hockey team won gold for the first time in 46 years so the puck is extra special to Hughes.
Not since the 1980 โMiracle On Iceโ had the American team won the top Olympics prize.
