Portland Development Director Issued Assault Summons Following Congress Street Incident

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland Police issued a criminal summons for assault to 54-year-old Gregory Watson of Portland on March 18, 2026, stemming from an incident that allegedly occurred nearly a month earlier on Congress Street, according to information released by the department.

Authorities say the summons relates to an incident reported on February 20, 2026, on Congress Street, one of Portland’s primary downtown corridors. Police have not released details about the nature of the alleged assault, the circumstances surrounding the incident, or whether any injuries were reported.

Officials emphasized that the matter remains under active investigation.

“This is an ongoing investigation and no further details will be released at this time,” Portland Police Public Information Officer Brad Nadeau said in a statement to the Maine Wire.

A criminal summons, unlike an arrest, directs an individual to appear in court to answer to a criminal charge. Police did not indicate whether additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.

Watson, 54, is identified as a Portland resident. He currently serves as a development director in Portland and is also a staff member of the Portland Social Justice Housing Committee.

In the interest of full transparency, this reporter serves as co-chair of the Portland Social Justice Housing Committee, where Watson also serves as a staff member.

No information about a court date has been released, and Portland Police have not provided further comment regarding the timeline for the investigation or potential next steps.

Police have indicated that additional details will be made public if and when they become available.
