A Medford man was critically injured on Monday when he was struck by a car in Veazie while trying to help a woman who had crashed into the median due to the snow.

At approximately 7:02 p.m., Maine State Police Troopers responded to I-95 Northbound near mile marker 189 for reports of a crash.

According to an initial investigation, police believe that an 18-year-old woman from Bangor had lost control of her 2013 Kia Sorento due to snowy conditions and came to rest in the median.

She was standing outside her vehicle behind a guardrail when a 54-year-old Medford man stopped to help her.

He stood with her while his wife called 911 to report the crash.

While they stood outside their vehicles, a 19-year-old woman from Old Town also lost control of her vehicle and allegedly struck the two pedestrians.

Based on the investigation, police believe that the man may have attempted to shield the 18-year-old driver before the impact.

They were both thrown down an embankment. The 18-year-old sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

The man was seriously injured, and remains in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle that struck them also sustained minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and police did not name any of the involved parties.
