Who in their right mind keeps a dozen cats in an unoccupied trailer insufficiently- or dangerously-maintained with a space heater?
Cops say 11 of them luckily survived a fire triggered by a faulty propane heater in an outbuilding behind a Hollis residence.
A twelfth kitty was apparently unaccounted for after the fire.
The structure used to shelter 12 cats caught fire Saturday morning.
Officials say all but one of the cats have been accounted for and are allegedly in good hands.
The Hollis Fire Department said they responded to Hollis Road, where smoke was reported coming from the structure.
Firefighters made entry and extinguished a fire in the building’s kitchen area.
The outbuilding, which had no electricity, was being used to shelter about a dozen cats, WCSH-TV reported.
Fire investigators determined the fire started next to a propane-fired portable heater located near a refrigerator.
The heater was connected to a 20-pound propane cylinder.
They’re calling it an accident, a nice way to veil a strangely-maintained cat colony in the dead of winter.
A second weekend fire involving pets killed two dogs In Belgrade.
The blaze at an Augusta Road home where no one was home resulted in the deaths of two dogs on Saturday.
It originated in the kitchen where the dogs likely jumped toward the stove to reach items that were on top of it, inadvertently igniting the burner, WMTW-TV said.
“We urge pet owners to never leave food, trash, or items on your stovetop and use stove knob covers or child-safety locks to prevent pets from accidentally turning on burners,” the fire marshal said in a statement.
