WASHINGTON – -Acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons has submitted his resignation to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, according to reporting from Fox News.
Fox News reported Thursday that Lyons submitted his resignation letter and intends to remain in the role through May 31 to assist with the leadership transition. According to sources familiar with the matter, Lyons cited a desire to spend more time with his family, noting that his sons are “reaching a pivotal point in their lives.”
Lyons, who has served in ICE for approximately 20 years and previously served in U.S. Air Force Special Forces, oversaw a significant expansion of immigration enforcement operations during his tenure. Under his leadership, ICE carried out roughly 584,000 deportations following President Donald Trump’s return to office in 2025.
His resignation comes amid heightened national attention on immigration enforcement and continued federal operations targeting individuals in the country illegally.
Maine Ties to Recent ICE Enforcement Efforts
Earlier this year, ICE conducted what was known as “Operation Catch of the Day” in Maine, a targeted enforcement effort that drew national attention and underscored the agency’s expanded activity in northern New England.
The Maine Wire was the only news organization granted direct access during that operation, conducting a ride-along with ICE agents and reporting from the ground as enforcement actions unfolded. That exclusive coverage provided readers with a firsthand look at how federal immigration enforcement operations are carried out in Maine communities.
The operation marked a significant moment for immigration enforcement visibility in the state, as federal officials increased their focus on criminal enforcement actions tied to immigration violations.

Transition Expected in Coming Weeks
Lyons’ decision to remain in the role until the end of May is intended to allow for a smooth transition within the agency. Fox News reported that Lyons is expected to move into the private sector following his departure from federal service.
His resignation leaves a leadership gap at a time when immigration enforcement remains one of the most closely watched federal priorities nationwide.
More details about his successor and the next phase of ICE leadership are expected in the coming weeks as the Department of Homeland Security prepares for the transition.

Mr. Lyons: Thank you for your many years of service to our Country.
