Three crewmen on the Maine-built USS Zumwalt were injured in a fire aboard the ship, USNI News reported.
The blaze erupted on the vessel while it was docked for repairs at Ingalls Shipyard in Mississippi.
The fire, reported Sunday night, was extinguished by the crew.
One sailor was transported to a local hospital for treatment for injuries related to the fire and is in stable condition.
Two others received first aid at the scene.
โThe Navy is investigating the cause of the fire and determining the extent of the damage,โ the Naval Surface Force said in a statement.
The 600-foot Zumwalt, the lead ship of its destroyer class, was launched in 2013 from Bath Iron Works.
The $4 billion ship has stealth capability due to a radar cross-section similar to a fishing boat despite its large size, making it difficult for enemy radar to detect it.
The 15,000-ton guided-missile destroyer has been at Ingalls since 2023 to have its long-range gun system replaced with tubes to accommodate long-range hypersonic missiles.
The ship and its class are named for Adm. Elmo Russell Zumwalt Jr., who was an American naval officer and the youngest man to serve as chief of naval operations.
Zumwalt played a major role in U.S. military history, especially during the Vietnam War.
A highly decorated war veteran, Zumwalt reformed the Navy’s personnel policies in an effort to improve enlisted life and ease racial tensions.
He died in 2000 at age 79.

One of the ugliest ships I’ve ever seen. Weird and way way over budget as well. So much so they reduced the number to be built from twelve or so to three. Then gave up on the bad idea.
