Key Democrat State Moves To Criminalize Investigative Journalism To Protect Fraud

A bill in California that targets investigative journalists from uncovering fraud in taxpayer-funded immigrant support programs is drawing extreme public scrutiny as healthcare fraud exposure whips the nation, prompting a rapid response by journalist Nick Shirley.

Assembly Bill 2624 introduced by Assembly Member Bonta and various California co-authors in February 2026, seeks to establish a confidentiality-based program designating certain services like health care agencies serving immigrant communities be granted protection from curious journalists tracking fraud.

The bill would prohibit journalists from posting about individuals potentially involved in fraud, threatening violations that include damages of at least $4,000 and up to three times so, if combined with other potential penalties that include imprisonment.

Journalist Nick Shirley couldn’t hold back, clarifying the bill is being introduced in direct response to his recent reporting that has uncovered insurmountable amounts of fraud in publicly funded systems.

In a post on X, Shirley wrote the legislation “would criminalize investigative journalism with misdemeanors, $10,000 fines, imprisonment, and content takedown.” He specifically mentioned it would also safeguard Somali “Learing Centers” in California being exposed for fraud.

The legislation frames the measure as necessary in preventing doxing/harassment of support care workers, claiming journalists to be violent agitators, while Democrats defend a taxpayer funded industry under investigation.

From Maine to California, Democrat dissonance persists despite confirmed fraud occurring across the nation with cornerstone California emerging to strike journalism first. The controversial legislature out west is far in distance, but appears similar to a dynamic in blue-curtained Maine.

The Maine Wire first reported that Gateway Community Services, a nonprofit in Maine, was found to be overbilling MaineCare since 2018 and continued to receive funding from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services under Gov. Janet Mills (D-Maine) for years.

After the organization’s collapse, state leadership continually avoids accurate response or comment on the fraudulent scheme, ignoring growing evidence produced through local investigative journalism.

Progressive Democrats contend a measure like AB2624 prioritizes safety and prevents violence, yet Democrat accountability maintains a one-sided approach in defending controversial programs safeguarding illegal immigrants. If enacted, the bill would go into effect on April 1, 2027, highlighting a dangerous move directly targeting journalism.

Sounds like it is completely against the first amendment. This will not survive court challenges. But that is normal for democrat laws.

Just amend the bill to include State/Federal Local law enforcement in the protected groups and see how fast that bill is killed.
