Southern Maine’s Version Of ‘Cheers’ Closing In Wake Of Menu Cutbacks

A popular longtime downtown Biddeford speakeasy that recently trimmed its menu is shutting its doors.

The first inkling of Mulligans closing first broke on BiddefordBuzz.com, which confirmed the rumor shortly after its initial speculative report.

The Lincoln Street restaurant/bar shut down its kitchen six months ago in what patrons predicted was the beginning of the end.

The establishment that calls itself a “classic American restaurant” has been in business nearly 30 years.

“We did everything we could to keep it going,” manager Jake DeLois, son of owner Joe DeLois, told the Biddeford Gazette. “But there were so many things working against us – things we had no control over.”

After a great year in 2019, the COVID pandemic that halted public gatherings brought with it a loss of clientele from which the restaurant never recovered, DeLois said.

Competition from upscale dining along with a street construction project and the city cutting parking spaces also contributed to its demise.

The bar’s last day is May 31.

“It’s going to be a bit harder to find a place where everyone knows your name in Biddeford,” the Gazette said. “Mulligan’s will be missed.”

Funny they didn’t mention the oppressive state regulations, minimum wage hikes and taxes.
Sorry to see you close and very sorry for the people who are unemployed
