The Senate condemned Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, just one day after his birthday, with a unanimous voice vote to support a resolution from Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.).
“Xi pushes a particular brand of evil, brazenly attempting to destroy Western civilization and harming his own citizens in his mission for power and control. So today, the Senate marked his birthday by passing my resolution condemning his numerous abuses and atrocities. We should treat Xi like the tyrant he is,” said Sen. Scott on X.
“The CCP, especially under Xi Jinping’s tyranny has a particular brand of evil,” he said on the Senate floor.
The resolution formally condemns Xi Jinping for orchestrating “crimes against humanity” as well as undermining peace.
It expresses solidarity with the Chinese people who have suffered under the yoke of communism and with everyone who has suffered as a result of the CCP’s actions.
The resolution also encourages the U.S. government to impose sanctions against CCP officials, though the resolution itself has no power to impose them directly.
The preamble highlights Xi Jinping’s lies surrounding COVID and blames the CCP for the lives lost to the virus.
“The Chinese Communist Party routinely lied about the origins of the SARS–CoV–2 virus, using international organizations like the World Health Organization to peddle falsehoods regarding the supposed limited transmissibility of the virus,” it says.
It also highlights China’s role in America’s drug crisis as a producer of fentanyl precursors, its corrupt and unsafe consumer and trade practices, its grievous impact on the environment, its aggression towards Taiwan, its espionage and smuggling activities in the U.S., its support for Iran, and its forced labor and genocide of the Uyghur people, among other atrocities.
