At a Time When Lewiston Needs Leadership, Commissioner Shukri Abdirahman Chose Confrontation

LEWISTON, Maine — Lewiston has spent much of the past year grappling with an alarming rise in violent crime, juvenile shootings, illegal firearms, and growing concerns over public safety. Residents have repeatedly asked city leaders for one thing: leadership.

What unfolded Friday outside the Bartlett Street mosque was not leadership.

Instead, it was another example of how a volatile situation can become even more combustible when elected officials choose confrontation over calm.

The afternoon began when Lewiston police responded to reports that a man walking his dog on the public sidewalk in front of the Bartlett Street mosque had been confronted by members of the mosque and individuals associated with the Friday “Safety Committee.”

While officers were investigating that disturbance, the situation escalated dramatically.

According to witnesses, a man driving a gray Toyota Prius stopped in the middle of the street and allegedly pulled a knife on an employee of a nearby business. Lewiston police quickly responded and took the suspect into custody.

Minutes later, while this reporter was filming a news update from a public location, another disturbing encounter unfolded.

A man driving a silver vehicle rolled down his window and made what appeared to be a finger-gun gesture toward this reporter. After pulling into a nearby parking lot, he repeated the gesture.

Given Lewiston’s recent history of gun violence, including multiple shootings involving juveniles and the recovery of dozens of illegal firearms this year, such conduct cannot simply be dismissed as a joke. Any gesture suggesting gun violence toward a member of the media deserves to be taken seriously.

This reporter immediately notified officers already on scene. Police approached the vehicle, removed two men, and detained them while they investigated the complaint. The two men were later handcuffed and put into the back of Lewiston Police cars.

Then the story took another turn.

Rather than allowing officers to do their jobs, Androscoggin County Commissioner Shukri Abdirahman inserted herself into the investigation.

UPDATE 2: The man who threatened @MaineWireJon has been detained by LPD.

Abdirahman loudly accused both this reporter and another witness of lying. She further claimed the allegations were motivated by racism and told responding officers she would sue.

Those are extraordinary statements coming from a sitting county commissioner.

Without waiting for investigators to determine the facts, an elected official publicly declared that eyewitnesses and a journalist were dishonest while threatening litigation during an active police investigation.

That is not leadership.

It is especially troubling given the atmosphere in Lewiston today.

The city has experienced an unprecedented surge in shootings, many involving juveniles. Lewiston police have seized dozens of firearms this year and have repeatedly warned about repeat violent offenders, youth crime, and escalating tensions on city streets. Law enforcement has worked tirelessly to stabilize neighborhoods while asking community leaders to help reduce conflict, not inflame it.

Friday presented another opportunity for public officials to demonstrate that leadership.

Instead, the focus shifted away from police attempting to restore order and toward accusations, confrontation, and threats.

The incident also raises another important issue that should not require debate.

Maine law is clear. Members of the public and members of the press have every legal right to photograph and record events occurring from public sidewalks and other public spaces, provided they are not interfering with law enforcement or violating other laws. That right exists regardless of who is being recorded or whether they approve of the coverage.

Journalists covering breaking news should not be subjected to intimidation, false accusations, or threats simply for documenting events in public.

Nor should elected officials contribute to an already tense environment by publicly attacking witnesses before an investigation is complete.

Public officials carry an added responsibility during moments of crisis. Their words can calm a crowd or inflame one. They can build confidence in law enforcement or undermine it.

On Friday, Lewiston police officers were faced with multiple rapidly unfolding incidents, including an alleged knife assault and complaints involving threatening behavior. Their focus should have remained on public safety.

Instead, additional conflict emerged after Commissioner Abdirahman chose to publicly challenge witnesses, accuse members of the media of lying, and threaten legal action.

Lewiston deserves better.

As the city continues to confront rising violent crime and public safety challenges, residents deserve leaders who lower the temperature, respect the investigative process, and recognize that transparency, including the ability of journalists to report freely from public spaces, is essential to maintaining public trust.

When public confidence is already strained, leadership matters more than ever. Friday was an opportunity to demonstrate that leadership.

Instead, it became another reminder of why so many residents continue asking whether their elected officials are helping solve Lewiston’s problems or making them worse.

When people voted for this lady, who do they think she was going to represent? People need to understand that recent legal or illegal migrants who are allowed to vote in Maine will vote as a solid block strictly for their own self interest while everyone else is split in their vote. In time who will prevail? Need one say more?

Arrest them all and deport them. We don’t need any of them here.
