A 33-year-old Indiana man has been arrested on multiple charges in connection with a fatal June crash in Hancock County that claimed the life of his 5-year-old son.

Dion Campbell of Elkhart, Indiana, was arrested Monday night and transported to the Hancock County Jail, where he remains held without bail pending his initial court appearance on Wednesday, July 1.

Campbell faces charges of Class A manslaughter, Class B criminal operating under the influence, Class C aggravated driving to endanger and Class D endangering the welfare of a child.

The charges stem from a single-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 11:26 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 193 in Township 22.

A Maine State Police trooper came upon the crash and found a 5-year-old boy in the front passenger seat whose condition was rapidly deteriorating. Troopers immediately began life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived.

Despite those efforts, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Campbell and a 10-month-old girl were transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Campbell is the father of both children, and the three were the only occupants of the vehicle.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Campbell’s vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection before striking an embankment. Investigators also determined that neither child was properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Route 9 was closed for several hours while authorities processed the scene.

The Cherryfield, Osborn and Aurora fire departments assisted at the crash, along with Bold Coast EMS and Northern Light EMS.

The crash remains under investigation.
