For the first time in more than 30 years, scallopers will now have access to northern New England’s scallop fishery, thanks to President Trump.
Trump announced he is pulling down the restrictions after hearing from frustrated scallopers.
The desire to ease restrictions on scallop fishing came out of an Oval Office meeting between Trump and scallop fishermen, who complained they were not allowed to fish in parts of Georges Bank, White House counselor Peter Navarro said.
The move follows an executive order from Trump aimed at increasing domestic seafood production by directing the Commerce Department to loosen regulations and by opening marine monuments to commercial fishing.
“The goal was really simple: We need to defend our domestic fishing industry, promote productive harvest of our resources and boost the great American fishermen,” a senior administration official was quoted by Reuters.
The scallop fishery in northern New England was shut down in 1994 due to alleged over-fishing.

The fishermen know how and when to preserve their industry better than politicians
The only positive thing to come out of being shut down for over 30 years is hopefully a much better fishing grounds in and around the entire area.
There should be plenty of seed scallops to help build a healthy population for years to come.
