A Maine wedding foodie has been banned from working as a caterer in the state, People.com is reporting.
Bethany Gregory is prohibited from catering for 20 years after allegedly using money from future contracts to fund her business without being able to provide services or refunds, according to court documents obtained by People.
The state Attorney General’s Office alleged that Gregory routinely breached contracts.
The complaint alleged that Gregory “engaged in unlawful business practices by routinely breaching contracts for catering services,” canceling contracts at the last minute without refunds, People.com’s Chiara Kim reported.
Gregory didn’t file an answer or pleadings or appear for the case, and the court imposed liability after a hearing late last month, Kim said.
The state claims Gregory used money she received from wedding deposits to buy catering equipment and a storefront called the Candor Café, expanding from there.
Gregory was ordered to pay $175,257 in restitution to former customers, along with $20,000 in civil penalties.
