In the months leading up to the presidential election, we’ve often heard Hillary Clinton speaking of “…trumped up, trickle-down economics.” Although I’ll give the former presidential candidate kudos for creative word play, her misinforming of the public in regards to President-elect Trump’s economic plan has confused her followers, and assisted in her downfall. President-elect Trump has constructed a plan that will lower taxes and encourage the addition of an estimated twenty-five million jobs to the U.S. economy; sweet on the ears for the forgotten man of the middle class. Trump’s policies will focus on bringing jobs previously held in the United…

As today’s world evolves toward a more progressive education system, it seems that we are struggling to catch on in the United States, and even in Maine itself. Born in Maine, I have attended all levels of schooling here, and will complete my collegiate studies here as well at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Though I truly believe that I was educated well enough to succeed in today’s economy, I have also observed many shortcomings in our academic structure. Test scores, graduation rates and even college attendance are all down in Maine, while other states seem to be…
In November of 2014, Governor Paul LePage (R) won re-election to his post as the Governor of the state of Maine by a mere 29,408 votes in a three-way race. After suffering a loss to “America’s most vulnerable gubernatorial seat,” the Democratic Party of Maine licked their wounds and vowed never to be beaten by such close margins again. Rather than providing a better candidate, liberals are making an attempt to change the rules of the game so they have a better shot at success in the next election cycle. The only problem here is that there is a victim;…
On November 8th, Maine citizens will go to the polls to cast their vote for several apocryphal referendum questions. From marijuana to the minimum wage, it appears liberal minds had their way with the ballot this year and did their best to mock the process. However incredulous these questions may seem, there is no greater farce than that of Question 3, the “universal” background check initiative. At first glance this referendum may seem like a “common sense” solution to a very real issue in some parts of the nation, but the Maine background check measure is nothing more than a…
“That road to V-E Day was hard and long, and traveled by weary and valiant men. And history will always record where that road began. It began here, with the first footprints on the beaches of Normandy.” – President George W. Bush I am very disappointed to report that even though last Monday was the seventy-second anniversary of one of the most tragic, yet courageous days of our nation’s military history (D-Day), there was very limited coverage on any mainstream media source. Like so much of our history in recent years, I fear that this too may be swept away, lost…
With an election year looming over of us, it is has become increasingly apparent that this is the year of limited choices. On the left, Democrats must choose between an aging socialist, who appears to have never sat through an economics class, and a liar who seems hell bent on continuing the legacy of Barrack Obama for eight more years; terrifying, I know. But on the right, we have a more fear-inducing issue at hand: the potential of a third-party candidate. While Donald Trump steam rolled his adversaries in the primary election (Cruz-Fiorina dropping out weeks ago), many moderate and…
“It is clear that Trump would be the most un-presidential president in U.S. history; but that’s the point.” Historically, every generation or so, there is a political movement in America. It has become increasingly clear that this current election cycle is a tipping point and that we’re about to witness the greatest political shakeup in decades. While the Democratic Party is doing its best to stifle the Bernie Sanders phenomenon and elect their Queen, Hillary Clinton, to the throne previously known as the presidency, Donald Trump has successfully ended the Cruz-Fiorina ticket by playing on the heartstrings of enraged American conservatives everywhere.…
“All I know is just what I read in the papers, and that’s an alibi for my ignorance.” ― Will Rogers While you watched the news last night after work, or as you sat reading your newspaper at breakfast this morning, you may have discovered a certain tone being embodied in the author’s delivery of information. The words being thrown at you, and the hundreds or thousands of other viewers watching the program or reading the paper, are brutally aimed at one political icon on one side of the agenda, while softer, gentler verbiage is blown to another politician on the…
“I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts and beer.” ― Abraham Lincoln Mankind has a special relationship with beer that goes back for centuries. After generations of refining and perfecting the flavor of beer, our European cousins brought the legendary pint-sized favorite with them around the world. Demand soon sprang up on all continents, creating a new economy that has grown only stronger in recent years. The popularity of the beverage is apparent when compared to…
The day is coming to a close. You have been suffering through wind, rain and hunger since 6:00 a.m. this morning awaiting your prize; a white tailed deer. As a working man, you have waited your whole week for this special day, and know that if not shot before sunset tonight, you will have to wait another week before you’re able to go back into the woods to stalk your prey. As the sun settles on the horizon, and your stomach moans for dinner, you climb down the tree stand and head home; hoping that the monster buck you’ve been…
“I’m not really into politics,” or “I know nothing about politics,” are the two most common phrases in the United States today when asking people about political viewpoints and ideology. Except for a few of us who have a genuine passion for the outcome of political agendas, our nation is becoming more and more disinterested with each passing election. With disinterest comes inaction and the ability for fringe groups to take over the political arena. As the majority of Americans care less, the system of democracy erodes with it, allowing for the more dedicated extremist groups to take the reigns…
As I’m sure you already know, certain politicians in the state of Maine, led by the Maine People’s Alliance, wish to raise the minimum wage. Although their plan may seem harmless, it would be detrimental to the already struggling economies of our state. In short, this tiered plan would raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour by 2017, and $1 a year until 2020, where it will sit at $12 an hour. Past this point, however, it may rise and fall with the cost of living. Workers who earn tips would see a minimum pay increase as well, and…
It is common etiquette to buy someone a beverage of choice or dinner when they render a service for you, or simply do something worth celebrating. Yes, the money comes out of your pocket, but you do not complain. How could you? You’re thankful for a favor that was done by someone willing to volunteer their time to you when they could have been home with their family or friends, enjoying a Sunday afternoon football game, or studying for an upcoming exam. Why don’t our Army and Air Guardsmen within the state of Maine get the same treatment? Are they…
The millennial generation is full of lazy, self-entitled, and politically-inept faux citizens. They wake up at 10 a.m., eat cold pizza from the day (or week) before, and then drive off to work at Starbucks in their 2014 Toyota Prius. Or do they? The demographic of young Americans born after 1980 has been scrutinized everywhere in the media and is often blamed for the demise of politics as we know it. With a recent influx of Starbucks sipping hipsters, some older Mainers have merely given up and lost hope. Are these political newcomers truly the product of an entitled and…
