Maine’s congressional delegation has spoken out following the unprecedented conviction of former Republican President Donald Trump in New York on Thursday on charges related to hush money payments made to a sex worker more than ten years ago.

The conviction is widely believed to be a politically motivated attempt by Democrat activists and supporters of President Joe Biden’s campaign to discredit President Trump before the upcoming November election.
“The district attorney, who campaigned on a promise to prosecute Donald Trump, brought these charges precisely because of who the defendant was rather than because of any specified criminal conduct. The political underpinnings of this case further blur the lines between the judicial system and the electoral system, and this verdict likely will be the subject of a protracted appeals process,” said Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine).
Of the four members of Maine’s congressional delegation, only Sen. Collins spoke out in defense of Trump, while the others supported the jury verdict to convict Trump on 34 charges.
Sen. Angus King, Maine’s independent senator who caucuses with Democrats, voiced his support for the jury who voted to convict Trump.
“Today in New York City an event took place that was historic: a former President found guilty on felony charges – an incredibly consequential decision after weeks of evidence and testimony. However, the event was also a typical day in courthouses across the country —12 men and women, from all walks of life, coming together to do their civic duty. As we face a world of uncertainties and conflict, the infrastructure of our shared American identity remains sturdy so long as we are vigilant in remembering our founding principles, including equal justice under the law,” said Sen. King.
King noted the importance of the case, and acknowledge the verdict’s unprecedented nature, but claimed that the jury was engaging in their standard, civic duty, and urged people to trust the system.
Democratic Rep. Jared Golden (ME-CD2) released a statement expressing similar sentiments.
“In this case, former President Trump has had his day in court and has been found guilty by a jury of his peers. I respect the jury’s decision. As to the many questions I’ve received about the politics of this decision, let me say this: As of today, Donald Trump is the Republican candidate for president. I have no doubt that information about this verdict will feature in the campaign. I trust the people of Maine with their votes,” said Rep. Golden.
Like King, Golden portrayed the trial as a just proceeding in which Trump was given a fair chance to defend himself in front of an unbiased jury and judge.
While Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree (ME-CD1) made similar points, her comments took on a more triumphant tone, calling the verdict an affirmation that no one is above the law.
“Today marks a solemn +unprecedented moment in US history. A former President—and the leading Republican nominee for President—has been fairly tried by a jury of his peers+convicted on 34 felony counts. This process, +the trials to come, has reaffirmed that no one is above the law,” said Rep. Pingree.
The Maine GOP also weighed in on the ruling, criticizing it for being a politically motivated verdict which displays a double standard in the justice system, and comparing it to the failed attempts by Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows to remove Trump from the state’s ballot.

“This trial was clearly a politically motivated farce designed to keep Trump out of the White House. Americans are clearly facing a two-tiered justice system. This Shenna Bellows-style lawfare should be rejected by all Americans. We have elections where people vote for their leaders. We should not have politically motivated and compromised judges and prosecutors running roughshod over our Constitution. It is time for Mainers to realize that the only way out of this mess is to vote Republican this fall,” said the Maine GOP.
The verdict has sparked responses from numerous high profile personalities, including Elon Musk, and liberal Independent presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr.
“Indeed, great damage was done today to the public’s faith in the American legal system. If a former President can be criminally convicted over such a trivial matter – motivated by politics, rather than justice – then anyone is at risk of a similar fate,” said Musk on his X platform.
Kennedy, who was a lifelong Democrat before breaking with his party to run as an independent, and who has been a staunch opponent of Trump, voiced his disgust over the verdict.
“The Democratic Party’s strategy is to beat President Trump in the courtroom rather than the ballot box. This will backfire in November. Even worse, it is profoundly undemocratic. America deserves a President who can win at the ballot box without compromising our government’s separation of powers or weaponizing the courts. You can’t save democracy by destroying it first,” said Kennedy.
Trump is set to be sentenced on July 11, only four days before the Republican National Convention, at which he will be announced as the party’s official presidential candidate.
If Pingree believes “no one is above the law,” why does she condone millions of illegals invading the southern border?
Pingree, and the other 3 are all war pigs, voting repeatedly to fund the deaths of generations of Ukrainians who suffer from our aid more than they benefit from it
Susan Collins voted to impeach Trump when he was no longer potus. And she did it to teach hium a lesson. She’s an accomplice to this mess. We need term limits now.
Angus the least independent independent.
More blah blah blah from these four. Something we could use much less of.
What a clown show Maine has become. So sad. These scum bags in office are not real Mainers, F, them.
King, Golden, Collins all need to be replaced with people who don’t hate America.
Proud to vote for a convicted felon!
She has no brain . She just repeats the party line!
Susan Collins also has no brain as she does not know what the term “FAIR TRIAL” includes
Angus also has no brain, as a member of the bar, he should know what is needed to have a fair trial. But then again he worked for PBS.
Golden also has no brain and that is what ranked choice voting gets you!
Golden and others say that President Trump was found guilty by a jury of his peers….
Definition – Peer – ‘one that is of equal standing with another’
Not one of those jurors is a billionaire, or a multi national real estate investor, or an ex President. The jurors were all MAGA hating Democrats and should be ashamed of themselves for returning a verdict of guilty on any one of those misdemeanors.
Gee, King Anus and Chellie Pinhead are both carpetbaggers that moved to Maine with the express intent of screwing Mainers! They have served Mainers that screwing over the years voting to do away with our rights every year! Then Jarhead(the cook)Golden He’s just another leftist flunkie that planned his short duration in the service for his bid for election to office,(anyone checked his stock portfolio), he’s played the game, rubber stamped all the far left policies right up to when it gets close to election he makes some minor moves to look conservative to get re-elected. Collins is frustrating on a lot of votes but, there are a lot of votes she’s spot on, but those are the votes that the media is silent on. And she has been there for business here in Maine, she has been the one to secure billions in work over the years for Bath Iron Works and much more for many other businesses here in Maine. Not perfect, but better than any democrat in Maine for Maine!

Too little, too late, Susie C. You showed us how useless you can be.
Anus King… Ha! … enough said.
Pingree and Golden, you’re both typical Communist suck-ups.
Can hardly wait to see justice come for all of them.
