Border Patrol agents in California last week caught an illegal alien transporting enough fentanyl to wipe out a city of 6.8 million people, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Wednesday.

According to CBP, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio, Calif., Border Patrol Station arrested a female driver of a vehicle transporting 29 pounds of fentanyl on the morning of Wednesday, May 15.

Border Patrol agents conducted a vehicle stop on the female driver on Interstate 10 in Indio, Calif., and determined that she was an undocumented illegal alien, despite her claim that she was a U.S. citizen, CBP said.

Her two underage children, who were in the vehicle at the time of the arrest, were both U.S. citizens.

A CBP K-9 unit arrived at the scene of the vehicle stop and requested permission to search the illegal alien’s white SUV.

The K-9 unit alerted agents to the rear seat area of the SUV where agents observed a sealed box containing shelves. Inside the shelves, agents discovered a cellophane wrapped packages consistent with narcotics smugglings.

Blue pills found inside the packages tested positive for fentanyl.

CBP seized a total of 29 pounds of fentanyl pills — enough to wipe out a city of 6.8 million people, the agency said.

The female driver was arrested, and the narcotics and vehicle were turned over to the Riverside County (Calif.) Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Bureau, for further investigation. The two children were turned over to their father.

“Border security professionals make apprehending dangerous drugs and people their personal responsibility here in the El Centro Sector,” said Indio Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino.

“This particular undocumented smuggler used two children in the smuggling scheme which is horrifying,” added Chief Bovino. “No regard for human life here folks, only greed.”
