A 16-year-old from Westbrook has been arrested for allegedly participating in a string of vehicle burglaries and of stealing a firearm from one the vehicles, Westbrook Police announced Wednesday.

According to police, officers were dispatched early in the morning on Sunday, May 19, in response to a report of vehicles being broken into on Main Street in Westbrook.

Officers responded to the scene and were able to locate and stop multiple suspects.

Westbrook Police said that when officers detained the suspects, a firearm — which was determined to be stolen from one of the Main Street vehicle burglaries — was found on a suspect who was repeatedly reaching for his pocket.

The suspect allegedly in possession of the stolen firearm was a 16-year-old male from Westbrook, police said.

He was charged with felony theft and burglary of a motor vehicle.

“We remind people of the importance of locking their motor vehicles, and of making sure their firearms are secured. With the warm weather upon us, we ask for parents help as well in making sure they know where their children are at night,” Westbrook Police said in a Wednesday social media post.

“Our thanks to the alert complainant that saw the burglaries happen and alerted us to them. This type of help from the public helps us solve crimes and keep the community safe,” they added.
