U.S. Border Patrol agents at a California gas station last week intercepted a shipment of 25 AK-47 style rifles believed to be headed to Transnational Criminal Organizations in Mexico, U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Friday.

According to CBP, on Wednesday, June 12, a Border Patrol K-9 alerted agents to a possible illicit conveyance in a Honda CR-V at a gas station in Blythe, Calif.

Border Patrol agents were granted permission to search the vehicle, and discovered 25 AK-47 style rifles, 25 30-round magazines and two pistols, CBP stated.

The two occupants of the vehicle, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen and a juvenile, were turned over to local enforcement and the vehicle was seized pending further investigation.

The illicit weapons shipment, the largest seizure made by CBP in the Yuma Sector in recent history, is believed by CBP to have been headed to Mexico.

“Transnational Criminal Organizations traffic weapons to fuel their illicit activity on both sides of the border.  This weapons seizure clearly demonstrates the importance of our Border Security mission and commitment of keeping our communities safe,” said CBP’s Yuma Sector Chief Patrol Agent Sean McGoffin on Friday.

“Our Border Patrol agents remain steadfast and vigilant, and I am extremely proud of the work they do each day,” McGoffin said.

What exactly is an “AK-47 style rifle”. Ignorance in the media is profound. All they know how to do is to write scary sounding stuff for their ignorant readers. There are very few REAL AK-47’s in civilian hands as they were only built for 3 or 4 yrs. They are selective fire and built with a machined receiver. All other Kalishnakov rifles have been built with sheet metal receivers (easier to build and more reliable). It would be smarter to call them Kalishmakov rifles but that would not scare anyone like this headline did. Our media are stupid jerks.
