A pediatric anesthesiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital was arrested and charged last week with the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts announced on Friday.
Christopher Sheerer, 35, was arrested after a search of his Boston residence resulted in the discovery of multiple chats containing pictures and videos of child pornography were discovered on Sheerer’s phone, prosecutors said.
Several other devices, including a tablet and computers were also seized by federal investigators and are pending forensic analysis.
The federal investigation into Sheerer stems from his previous job as a fellow in pediatric anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, when investigators identified Sheerer as a member of a group chat on an encrypted messaging app that required participants to upload nude images of children.
According to court records, Sheerer allegedly uploaded imagery of a child known to him to gain admission to that group.
Boston Children’s Hospital have issued a statement saying that they have terminated Sheerer’s employment, which began at the start of this month, following his arrest.
“When Boston Children’s Hospital learned today of new fellow Dr. Christopher Sheerer’s arrest, we immediately terminated their employment. Our patients’ and their families’ safety and well-being remain our utmost priority,” the hospital stated.
If convicted, Sheerer could face five to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 for each charge against him.
