A Dominican national facing felony drug trafficking charges after his arrest last month in Prospect, Maine, is an illegal alien with a pending case for his deportation from the U.S., according to arrest records obtained by the Maine Wire.

Darvin Ruiz, a 21-year-old man from the Dominican Republic with an address in Lawrence, Mass., was arrested on June 22 in Prospect by Maine State Police.

Ruiz was charged with aggravated trafficking of fentanyl and unlawful trafficking of schedule W drugs, both felony level offenses.

Booking records from Twin Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset indicate that Ruiz is a citizen of the Dominican Republic.

He is currently being held at Twin Bridges Jail on $50,000 cash bail for the local charges, as well as a federal immigration detainer issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

According to a copy of the immigration detainer obtained by the Maine Wire, probable cause to hold Ruiz in custody was established due to Ruiz facing pending and ongoing removal proceedings.

The detainer, which is dated June 23, the day following Ruiz’ arrest, also states that evidence indicates Ruiz lacks legal immigration status in the U.S. or notwithstanding immigration status is deportable under U.S. immigration law.
