FBI Pressured Facebook to Interfere in 2020 Election: Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg says the FBI pressured Facebook to censor a story that could well have prevented Joe Biden from becoming president in 2020

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has accused the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of pressuring the company in 2020 to censor accurate reporting about then-Democratic candidate for president Joe Biden.

The allegation, which Zuckerberg made in an Aug. 26 letter to the House Judiciary Committee, raises the prospect that America’s top law enforcement agency coerced a private company into censoring truthful information about Biden in order to influence the outcome of a presidential election.

In the letter, Zuckerberg addressed the controversy surrounding Meta’s handling of a New York Post story involving corruption allegations against President Biden’s family.

The bombshell story revealed that Hunter Biden had abandoned a laptop computer at a Delaware repair shop and that the computer contained a trove of evidence suggesting that the Biden family had engaged in extensive business dealings with foreign companies, including foreign companies tied to authoritarian regimes.

Evidence from the laptop also pointed directly at then-Vice President Joe Biden as assisting and benefitting from his son’s efforts to leverage his political office for personal financial gain during and after his time serving as President Barack Obama’s VP.

The explosive story had the potential to reshape the 2020 presidential election and seriously weaken Biden’s campaign to defeat incumbent Republican President Donald Trump.

However, the censorship campaign — combined with a sustained effort by left-wing media and former members of the intelligence community to cast the reporting as Russian disinformation — succeeded in keeping the reporting from reaching a larger audience.

For his role in helping the FBI potentially rig the 2020 election and install Biden in the White House, Zuckerberg says: he’s sorry.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that the company “shouldn’t have demoted” the story while waiting for fact-checkers to review it, a decision that was heavily criticized at the time by conservatives. Since the censorship affray, no element of the New York Post’s original report has been debunked.

In a letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg expressed regret over not being more vocal about the government’s alleged pressure on Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

The letter, made public by the committee on Monday, has reignited concerns about the intersection of government influence and free speech on social media platforms.

In addition to election interference from the FBI, Zuckerberg also claimed that the Biden administration continued pressuring the company after the election in order to manipulate the spread of information related to the ongoing COVID-19 scare.

“In 2021, senior officials from the Biden administration repeatedly pressured our teams to censor certain content, including satire and humor related to COVID-19,” Zuckerberg wrote. “I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken.”

The accusations come amid ongoing scrutiny of Meta and other social media platforms, particularly from Republicans who have long alleged that conservative voices are unfairly targeted by content moderation policies. The House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), has been investigating whether the government colluded with tech companies to suppress speech.

In response to the letter, the White House defended its communications with Meta, stating that the administration’s actions were aimed at protecting public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. “When confronted with a deadly pandemic, this administration encouraged responsible actions to protect public health and safety,” a White House spokesperson said in a statement. “Our position has been clear and consistent: we believe tech companies should make independent choices about the information they present.”

The controversy surrounding government influence over social media platforms has reached the Supreme Court. In a recent ruling, the court rejected challenges to government communications with tech companies, citing a lack of legal standing by the plaintiffs. However, the justices did not address the broader First Amendment implications of the case, leaving the issue unresolved.

Meta has since updated its content moderation policies, with Zuckerberg emphasizing that the company will push back against future attempts by any administration to influence its content standards.

The Maine Wire’s own experience on Facebook suggests Zuckerberg’s newfound views of censorship have not trickled down to the rest of the company.

In the past week, the social media platform has censored fact-based political reporting showing that Reps. Jared Golden and Chellie Pingree helped funnel taxpayer money from the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 to political activists in Maine who are actively working to get Golden and Pingree re-elected.

Biden Admin / Democrats used the Inflation Reduction Act to funnel money to political activists.

Facebook is not allowing the story to circulate on Facebook, citing a vague violation of community standards.

This latest example of censorship follows a broader campaign in June, in which Facebook deleted nearly 4,000 posts from private users profile pages if those posts contained links to the Maine Wire. Facebook has since apologized for the deletions, alleging that the mass-deletion was carried out in error.

As the debate continues, the implications for free speech and the role of government in regulating online discourse remain a critical issue ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Wait…where is some attorney general or district attorney rushing to indict Biden for crimes against humanity like they did Trump. The FBI long ago proved what a joke they are. I wish they’d just put on the brown shirts with the arm bands and give up all pretense they’re a true national law enforcement agency. And please shut down the FBI tv show trying to bring honor and honesty to the organization. NOBODY is buying it any more. You’re all a bunch of rump swabs beholden to the democrat party.

Enough is enough. I’m wondering if from now on incognito conservatives ran for office on popular liberal platforms but after elected vote as conservatives.  Shouldn’t be a problem since dems are blind sheep and will believe anything you tell them and of course lying is an approved practice in politics to get what you want so no problem there.
