The Milford firefighter who was once convicted of assaulting his baby has resigned from the school board just two days after he was elected to it.
The school department announced that Morgan Gunnell submitted his notice, effective immediately.
Gunnell had gotten elected to the board with seven write-in votes and downplayed any fallout from his child-beating conviction.
In 2015, Gunnell pleaded guilty to an assault charge after a grand jury found that he knowingly or recklessly caused bodily injury or offensive physical contact to his infant son.
Despite the conviction, Gunnell, who has since been a Milford firefighter seven years, said earlier this week that he’s built up trust in the town by working as a first responder and doesn’t see why people would be uncomfortable with him serving on the School Committee.
“I don’t think there’s any reason that anyone can’t trust me. They can choose whether they want to or not. But I stand on my service to the town,” he said.
“What they’re uncomfortable with is whatever they may be uncomfortable with.,” Gunnell added. “They can make that decision on their own.”
But in the wake of Gunnell’s election town officials got a lot of pushback from residents questioning his credentials.
The officials said they had no legal means to prevent his election or his serving on the board.
