Border patrol agents conducted a routine traffic stop near Skowhegan on July 27, and discovered 13 Romanian citizens. During the stop, agents discovered that the Romanians were in the U.S. illegally, and they were taken into custody.
The Romanians are now facing deportation.
This is notably not the first time a large group of Romanians have been discovered illegally crossing into the U.S. via the Maine border.
In November 2023, Border patrol agents apprehended 20 Romanian nationals crossing the U.S.-Canada border illegally into Hodgdon.
That incident involved four vehicles, with ten adults and ten minors, crossing in what the Border Patrol described as a “border rush.” Two of the Romanians involved in that incident were members of a transnational criminal organized crime group.
