A Dexter man is facing felony assault charges after he was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly abusing his seven-month-old infant, causing severe injuries requiring hospitalization.

The Dexter Police Department received reports last Thursday of suspected violent abuse of a seven-month-old infant. The injuries to the infant were described as “serious” and required the baby to be hospitalized.

After the baby was discovered with severe injuries, local law enforcement contacted the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit for assistance with the investigation.

Detectives arrived and collaborated with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to conduct the investigation.

Six days after the alleged abuse was first discovered, police arrested the victim’s father, Kolby Drake, 23, of Dexter, and charges him with aggravated assault, assault, and domestic violence assault.

Drake was transported to the Penobscot County Jail, where he is awaiting his initial court appearance later this week.

Police did not specify whether the infant is expected to make a full recovery.
