An elderly Gray woman allegedly smashed her car through a Brunswick tennis gym on Thursday, sped through multiple active courts, injured someone, and eventually came to a stop in the lobby.

Brunswick police received multiple calls at around 9:41 a.m. reporting that a 2014 Jeep Cherokee had crashed into the Maine Pines Racquet and Fitness at 120 Harpswell Rd.

Police responded with the Brunswick Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services and discovered what law enforcement described as a “very chaotic scene.”

At the time of the crash, the gym was open, and numerous patrons were exercising or playing tennis.

Law enforcement discovered that the driver, Michelle Vadeboncoeur, 72, of Gray, had allegedly smashed through the outer wall of the building and, instead of coming to a stop, reportedly “sped” through four active tennis courts.

According to witnesses, patrons scattered in all directions to avoid being hit by the speeding vehicle. Vadeboncoeur reportedly crashed through the lobby and eventually came to a stop in another room.

Only one patron was injured when he was allegedly struck by flying glass shards. Both he and Vadeboncoeur were transported to Mid-Coast Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Vadeboncoeur’s vehicle was totaled, and the building was forced to shut down due to the severity of the damage. Police described removing the vehicle as a “daunting task,” and emergency personnel were on the scene until 1:15 p.m.

Police did not release any information about the cause of the crash.
