The Pittsfield Police Department arrested a man on animal abuse charges earlier this month after he allegedly sexually abused a dog.

Police responded on September 18 to reports from the Hometown Veterinary Clinic in Fairfield that a dog had been sexually assaulted and had become paralyzed.

Workers at the veterinary clinic believed that the sexual abuse likely took place in Pittsfield, and Pittsfield Animal Control Officer Russell Craft began an investigation.

He established probable cause to take Christopher Colson, 24, of Pittsfield, into custody the day after receiving the report.

Colson was transported to the Somerset County Jail, where he faces charges of cruelty to animals and aggravated cruelty to animals. He was given a $50,000 bail.

According to his inmate page at the Somerset jail, Colson will next appear in court on January 12.

Though the arrest occurred on September 19, the police did not issue a press release until Monday.
