The Maine State Police are investigating after a man was found dead near a backyard fire pit outside a Sanford home.

Shortly after 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, the Sanford Police Department responded to a report of a dead man by the fire pit.
The Sanford Police Department notified the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, which then notified the Maine State Police’s Major Crimes Unit.
State Police investigators, Fire Marshals, and Sanford Detectives remained on the scene all day.
The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy.
As of Tuesday morning, the body has not yet been identified, and the cause and manner of death are still under investigation.
Police did not specify whether they are investigating the death as a potential homicide.
