Sanford police are searching for one or more potentially armed suspects after an occupant of a vehicle fired a gun at an officer during an attempted traffic stop early Tuesday in Springvale.
Around 1:12 a.m., an officer tried to stop a vehicle near Shaw Street and Lebanon Street. During the stop, a person inside the vehicle shot at the officer and the police cruiser, then fled, according to a public safety alert from the Sanford Police Department. The vehicle was later found abandoned. No officers were injured.
Police, assisted by neighboring agencies, are conducting operations in and around Blanchard Road, Hanson Ridge, Oak Street, Lebanon Street, Sunset Road, and Smith Road. Residents in those areas are urged to remain alert, avoid the locations if possible, and not approach or confront anyone suspicious. Anyone who sees something should move to a safe place and call 911 immediately. Those involved may still be armed.
Police said they will release more information when it is safe to do so and asked for the public’s patience and cooperation. No suspect description or additional details about the vehicle have been released.
