At approximately 4:58 p.m. on Monday, Portland police responded to a reports of an assault at the Mobil gas station at 1196 Congress Street.
Witnesses told police that a person was pumping gas when a male suspect allegedly entered their vehicle and attempted to drive away.
According to witnesses, the vehicle’s owner then jumped onto the car to prevent the alleged thief from escaping with it, causing it to crash into nearby bushes.
When officers arrived, they found the vehicle’s owner restraining the suspect and took the alleged thief, Aaric Rowe, 38, of South Portland, into custody.
Portland police officers transported Rowe to the Cumberland County Jail, but jail officials refused to admit him due to an unspecified, pre-existing medical issue.
Instead, officers transported him to the Maine Medical Center for treatment and issued him a criminal summons on charges of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, theft by unauthorized use of property, and robbery.
Since he was not jailed, it will be up to Rowe to comply with the criminal summons, and he will remain free at least until his court date.
