Nearly three-quarters of Mainers perceive the state as unaffordable, and 30 percent plan to move away at some point in the next five years.

Of that 30 percent, two-thirds cite housing and the cost of living as the driving factor for their decision to leave the state.

Over half of respondents pointed toward a desire for a different political or social environment, including 71 percent of Republicans and 40 percent of Democrats.

50 percent of those who plan to leave the state mentioned lower taxes as a reason for their plan to move away from Maine in the near future.

This data comes from a new Pine Tree State Poll, a States of Opinion Project conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

Regardless of concrete plans, only about a quarter of Mainers want to move out of state. There are, however, about twice as many Republicans than Democrats who wish to leave at some point.

Of those who say they would leave the state, about 30 percent say they would move elsewhere in New England while another 30 percent say they would go to the South.

More than half of Mainers said that they are unlikely to leave the state and don’t want to, meanwhile just six percent said they want to leave the state but most likely will not.

16 percent of those surveyed said they want to leave the state and likely will.
