On November 3, police first received information from a witness claiming to have observed Brian F. Hayes, 36, of Houlton, in possession of child pornography.
After speaking to the witness, Officer Jacob Goodman launched an investigation.
During the investigation, officers established probable cause to seize Hayes’ phone and obtained a warrant to search its contents.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) assisted the Houlton Police Department in searching the device. The search allegedly revealed multiple images of child sexual abuse material and other related material.
Law enforcement interviewed an additional witness, and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) joined the investigation.
Officers eventually obtained an arrest warrant for Hayes and took him into custody on November 25, charging him with dissemination of sexually explicit material, possession of sexually explicit material, and domestic violence criminal threatening.
The Houlton Police Department did not include any details on how Hayes incurred the domestic violence charge.
Despite the arrest taking place in November, the Houlton Police Department did not issue its press release until Tuesday.
Hayes was transported to the York County Jail but was subsequently released on a $3,000 bail.
