An Anti-ICE protester deliberately interfered with the Brewer Police Department and blew an air horn at officers while they investigated false threats made against schools across the state.
Multiple school districts across the state, along with various other institutions, including banks and businesses, began receiving a variety of threats, ranging from school shootings to bomb threats, according to sources who spoke to the Maine Wire.
The Brewer Police Department was collaborating with another unspecified law enforcement agency to investigate a person of interest in the case living in Brewer when a woman reportedly deliberately drove up as the police were staging.
She allegedly interfered with police by repeatedly blowing an air horn in officers’ faces, refusing to leave after being ordered to do so, and shouting expletives at the officers, who were carrying out legitimate law-enforcement action.
During the incident, the woman reportedly told officers that she “didn’t want ICE” in the neighborhood, despite the operation involving no ICE agents and having nothing to do with immigration enforcement, and the local police vehicles being clearly marked as such,
“Her actions interfered with legitimate law enforcement operations and created a real risk to the investigating officers,” said the Brewer Police Department in a press release.
The Brewer Police Department spoke to The Maine Wire, providing further details about the incident.
They told The Maine Wire that the woman, later identified as Mary Conmee, 63, of Orrington, eventually left the scene after an officer explained that they were not ICE agents and that she was compromising the safety of the officers.
The department explained that the person of interest became aware of the police presence because of Conmee, and if he had been responsible for the threats, officers would have been gravely endangered.
“We’re just not going to stand for this sort of behaviors,” said the department
Though officers were not able to arrest Conmee at the scene, they tracked her down after interviewing the person of interest and issued her a criminal summons on charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing governmental administration.
