HARPSWELL, Maine — The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire that destroyed a home early Friday in Harpswell and left one person with a burn injury.

The Cumberland Regional Communication Center received reports of a structure fire at about 2:40 a.m. Jan. 23, 2026, at a home at 7 Hugh Avenue, authorities said.

Occupants of the residence alerted neighbors at 5 Hugh Avenue. Residents of 5 Hugh Avenue were safely evacuated by the Harpswell, Brunswick, Orr’s Island, and Bailey Island fire departments, officials said. No injuries were reported among the occupants, though that residence sustained minor heat-related damage.

One adult male occupant of 7 Hugh Avenue suffered a burn injury to his wrist and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, officials said. The three other occupants of 7 Hugh Avenue were not injured.

The home at 7 Hugh Avenue was considered a total loss. Investigators believe a generator and the use of a heater may have contributed to the fire. The incident remains under investigation by the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office.
