A 71-year-old woman was tragically killed on Wednesday after her vehicle was struck while she was parked on the shoulder of Harpswell Island Road.

At around 2:49 p.m., the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a crash on Harpswell Island Road in Harpswell, near the intersection with Tower Hill Road.

Deputies and the Harpswell Fire and EMS Department responded to the scene.

They discovered Jean Appleby Johnson, 71, seriously injured and administered life-saving measures shortly after the crash, but she was nevertheless pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the preliminary investigation, police believe that Johnson had parked her black 2019 BMW X3 on the southbound shoulder of the road for unspecified reasons and was standing outside the car at the time of the crash.

Alton Wyman, 41, was reportedly traveling in the northbound lane in his beige 2019 Chevrolet Silverado when he crossed the centerline, entered the entirety of the southbound lane, and struck Johnson and her vehicle.

Wyman was transported to the Maine Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the tragic crash, and no charges have been filed against Wyman at this time.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, but the department promised to release more information as it becomes available.
