WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump launched a fresh attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar on Sunday night, accusing the Minnesota Democrat of being tied to what he called “19 Billion Dollars in Minnesota Somalia Fraud” in a Truth Social post that also suggested she should be jailed or sent back to Somalia.

Trump’s blast at Omar is part of a broader drumbeat from the president and his administration that has increasingly linked high-profile fraud cases in Minnesota to Somali immigrants, even as federal prosecutors and court records have described a far smaller, though still significant, confirmed total in the best-known case. Reuters has reported that the major Minnesota scandal Trump has repeatedly invoked centered on the nonprofit Feeding Our Future and involved roughly $250 million in stolen federal child nutrition funds, uncovered in 2020 with indictments beginning in 2022 and dozens of guilty pleas.

In recent days, Trump has amplified his attacks beyond Minnesota and directly dragged Maine into the narrative. During remarks to the Detroit Economic Club, Trump claimed the same “Somali scams” were “going on in Maine, too,” indicating he was expanding his focus from Minnesota to Maine as part of a wider push centered on fraud allegations and immigration enforcement.

The rhetoric has coincided with a series of administration moves and public statements tying immigration enforcement to fraud allegations involving Somali communities. Reuters has reported that the administration is ending Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals, requiring affected individuals to leave or secure other legal status by March 17, 2026.

Trump’s renewed attention on fraud has also been featured in official White House messaging focused on “Minnesota’s fraud epidemic,” underscoring that the administration is elevating the issue as a signature political and enforcement priority.
