Chaos erupted at a Lowell, Maine, home on Saturday after Penobscot Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to reports of a potentially armed, intoxicated man destroying a residence during a family fight.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., Penobscot deputies received notice of a family fight in Lowell, with callers reporting that William Smith, 48, of Lowell, was drunk and destroying their house.

Deputies responded, but Smith had reportedly departed the residence. When deputies arrived, witnesses reported that Smith had threatened to retrieve a firearm.

A witness later reportedly found two handguns on the floor of the garage and a rifle in the snow in the driveway.

While speaking to witnesses, deputies reportedly heard a pickup truck engine and observed a white pickup traveling toward them on West Old Main Road.

Witnesses at the residence allegedly confirmed that the vehicle belonged to the suspect, and deputies pursued the vehicle.

Deputies ultimately found the truck stuck in a snowbank at the intersection of Lowell Road and Cedar Rest Road.

Law enforcement arrested Smith on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.

After the arrest, the sheriff’s department’s Criminal Investigation Division applied for and received an Extreme Risk Protection Order under Maine’s Yellow Flag laws, requiring the confiscation of Smith’s firearms.

Smith bailed out of the Penobscot County Jail on Sunday.
