At approximately 4:13 a.m., the Bangor Police Department responded to a Main Street business after a caller reported that a homeless man was attacking a granite pillar with a hammer.
When police arrived, they allegedly found the suspect still locked in combat with the stone, actively beating it with his hammer.
Officers noted that, as a result of the attack, a large amount of granite had been removed from the pillar.
Police also noticed damage to the business’s granite door frame.
The suspect was identified as Matthew Bowden, 46, homeless, and was taken into custody.
He was transported to the Penobscot County Jail, where he faces charges of criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and violating conditions of release.
