The Way Way Store, which has it every which way, and from way, way back, is shutting down after a century in business.
“For many people throughout Maine, their local general store is considered a lifeline,” reports WCYY.com.
The store sells candy, ice cream, cold drinks, nostalgia and antiques and yes even canoes.
“General stores are a place where you can get just about anything – from light groceries to takeout food, hardware and even a wedding gown if you know the right place,” the news outlet says.
Shared on Facebook, the official Way Way Store page made a simple announcement.
The store has closed, apparently permanently, according to only the second family to own it in its long history.
The original Way Way Store opened 110 years ago – in 1916 – out of a barn that was located way, way from downtown.
The store was so named because the Buxton Road location is nearly three miles away from Main Street, according to Saco Bay News.
The current location was built in the late 1920’s, its unique design earning it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Way Way Store closed in 2003 before being reopened in 2011 for its second – and apparently now final – run.
“Way Way Store Closed Forever,” its owners said in their Facebook post. “Finally Retired, With Gratitude.”
“Gone but not forgotten 😢 so many memories for folks in the community,” posted BiddefordBuzz.com.
