A suspected drunk driver knocked down a telephone pole in Standish on Sunday, downed wires, and caused an hours-long road closure while Central Maine Power responded to make repairs.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Standish Fire Department responded to reports of a crash at 417 Bonny Eagle Road, Standish.

A vehicle allegedly crashed into a telephone pole, leaving the driver entrapped.

Driver Anthony Black, 26, of Standish was reportedly traveling northbound when he drove off the right side of the road and smashed into a telephone pole, snapping it in half.

Black’s vehicle ended up lying on its passenger side

Black was temporarily trapped in the car, but bystanders were able to quickly assist him out of the wreckage.

The crash caused property damage and significant damage to Black’s vehicle.

Black was transported to the Maine Medical Center for treatment.

The crash left Bonny Eagle Road closed for approximately four hours while Central Maine Power performed repairs, emergency services removed vehicles, and cared for “patients.”

The press release made no other mention of additional people being injured in the crash, and it is not clear who the additional “patients” were, or how they were injured.

The crash remains under investigation, but the Cumberland Sheriff’s Department believes that both alcohol and speed were factors.

Currently, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident.
