BREWER, Maine – A Brewer man was arrested Sunday morning after Maine State Police said he fled the scene of a two-vehicle crash on I-395 in Bangor that sent a young woman to the hospital.
Troopers responded Saturday, April 25, at approximately 11:49 a.m. to I-395 westbound near the Main Street overpass for a reported crash involving two vehicles.
According to witnesses, a black Ford Mustang struck a Volkswagen coupe, causing the coupe to spin out, leave the roadway, enter the grass gore, cross the Main Street on-ramp, roll over a guardrail, and travel down an embankment into the woods.
The driver of the Volkswagen, a 20-year-old woman from Chester, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Mustang spun into the concrete jersey barrier in the median, and witnesses reported seeing the driver walk away from the crash scene on foot.
Troopers and local agencies canvassed the area for the male driver, but he was not immediately located.
A photo later submitted to the Maine State Police 411-Tip Line showed the man fleeing the scene. Police said the individual in the photo matched the description of the Mustang’s registered owner, 48-year-old David Harris of Brewer.
On Sunday, April 26, at approximately 7:40 a.m., troopers located Harris at his apartment in Brewer and placed him under arrest.
Harris was transported to the Penobscot County Jail and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash with Injury, a Class C felony; Aggravated Driving to Endanger, a Class C felony; Failure to Make an Oral Accident Report, a Class E misdemeanor; and Operating Without a License, a Class E misdemeanor.
State Police thanked the Bangor Police Department, Bangor Fire Department, Brewer Police Department, Brewer Fire Department, Maine Department of Transportation, Union Street Towing, Bouchard’s Towing, and members of the public who assisted with the investigation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
