The wife of the leading Democrat primary candidate for U.S. Senate, who’s made a campaign issue out of her difficulty getting pregnant, has lost her first baby.
The Graham Platner campaign announced Monday night Amy Gertner suffered a miscarriage following the couple’s highly publicized IVF treatments in the country of Norway.
“Just as the difficulty in accessing fertility treatment is overlooked, so too is the heartbreak of loss,” Platner Saturday social-media post. “We suffered that heartbreak recently, when we experienced a miscarriage.”
“While it’s difficult to talk about, we felt it was important to be open, because so many families have experienced the same,” he added.
Platner allowed their problem to transition from personal to political by also saying that 20 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage.
“To anyone who has experienced a loss like this: you are not alone,” he said. “We’re with you – just as so many of you have been there for us.
Platner said the couple hasn’t decided “what comes next.”
He is in the middle of a bruising primary campaign against Maine’s term-limited governor for the Democrat primary nomination.
Janet Mills has been badly trailing in the polls ahead of the June 9th election to see who will take on five-term GOP Sen. Susan Collins.
The Democrat race also includes a third contender, David Costello.

Thats a shame. Sorry this happened. Dont like his politics but this is really sad.
How many abortions has she had?
if we’re gonna live this out in public and demand the taxpayers pay for expensive, fertility treatments, then we should discuss the rest of the story, including why the fertility treatments become necessary.
We need to tell young women that they have a cup they two abortions in college another one in their 20s and then wait until they’re 40 years old before they try to have a child, it ain’t gonna go well.
Medically, speaking, a mother of the age of 35 is considered a geriatric pregnancy, geriatric as an old person. Reality is that the female body is most suitable to have children and have children easily at the age of 20.
And we’re not supposed to say this, but abortions make it much easier for a woman to have miscarriages in the future. I know too many women who nonchalantly had abortions when they’re in college and then struggled to bring one child to term when they were older.
I can sympathize with the couple, I personally would’ve kept all this private, but if they’re gonna make the issue of fertility treatments public, then let’s tell the rest of the story. The woman was 39 years old when she testified in front of a bill in the legislature, which makes her probably 40 now — she should’ve had children 15 years ago.
