A popular Maine ski resort known for its quality spring skiing is under fire over the early closure of terrain and lifts.
Sunday River in Newry, Maine closed White Heat, its signature double-black-diamond trail, earlier than usual.
The mountain also shut down on weekdays, a practice unusual for Sunday River even though it’s increasingly common among ski resorts as the season drags on.
But Sunday River skiers were upset with the mountain ‘s spring operations strategy, Ian Wood of UnofficialNetworks.com is reporting.
After lots of criticism, along with an increased push from nearby ski resorts to stay open, Sunday River responded, Wood said.
For one, they reopened on Friday.
“When we announced reduced spring operations, we missed the mark,” mountain officials said. “Our plan to wind down the season didn’t reflect who we are or what our guests and passholders deserve.
“Thank you for being part of this community, and for holding us accountable.”
Wood isn’t just reporting on the ski world, he lives it, having grown up in the great mountains of neighboring New Hampshire.
He’s also been a member of the ski patrol, an assignment allowed only the best skiers in the world.
Being from New Hampshire, Wood understands that spring skiing in New England is a religion not to be trifled with.
Spring conditions should hold in Maine through the weekend April 19 at Sunday River and Saddleback, while Sugarloaf is intending to make it until April 26.
Black Mountain in New Hampshire and Killington in Vermont are holding out until – get this – Memorial Day, according to SnowBrains.com.
