Maine to Receive Additional $4.3 Million in Federal Funding for Home Heating Assistance

Sen. Susan Collins (R) has announced that Maine will be receiving an additional $4.3 million in home heating assistance funding from the federal government.

This comes shortly after Sen. Collins and a group of bipartisan colleagues sent a letter to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) urging the release of the remaining $400 million in funding appropriated by Congress in FY26 for heating assistance.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, more commonly referred to as LIHEAP, is a federally funded program that helps low-income households cover utility bills, respond to energy emergencies, and reduce long-term costs through home weatherization and energy efficiency improvements.

It is estimated that more than six million households nationwide received assistance through LIHEAP last year.

“It is welcome news that following our recent outreach, the funding for this critical program has been released to states,โ€ Sen. Collins said in a statement.

โ€œLIHEAP provides vital relief to thousands of Mainers, helping them avoid the constant worry of choosing between heating their homes and covering other basic necessities,” she said. “That is why I am proud that the Senate Appropriations Committee worked in a bipartisan manner to increase funding for the program this year.โ€

Eligibility for LIHEAP aid is based on income, family size, and the availability of resources. Applications will remain open through the spring of 2026, or until the programโ€™s funding is exhausted.

“Sen. Socialism is an interesting economic system, until you run out of other peoples’ money.
